| New: Page Down for the Spring 2009 Schedule. The Tennessee Valley Authority established and piloted Weekend Academy in East Tennessee in 1996. When TVA leaders brought the idea of partnership to Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division in 1998, the program expanded and opened its third chapter in Memphis that fall. Since that time, Weekend Academy, Inc. has worked closely with MLGW and the Memphis City Schools to provide meaningful enrichment activities to students. Our current target schools in Memphis are Hamilton Elementary and Cummings Elementary. Approximately 30 third, fourth and fifth grade students can participate in the program during the school year. Each Weekend Academy student is given the opportunity to spend a minimum of two years in the program. The Weekend Academy’s goal is to provide learning experiences that develop self-esteem, positive social interaction and a zest for learning. Our chapter activities focus on improving oral and written communications, thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills, as well as improving school attendance. The Weekend Academy’s curricula are also aligned with the Memphis City Schools’ “Every Child. Every Day. College Bound.” concept. Instructional units are designed to expose the students to a wide range of knowledge while developing competencies and skills Weekend Academy students meet on two Saturdays a month on the campus of MLGW University from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Transportation, breakfast and lunch are provided. Students may also receive caps or jackets. Trained teachers and high school tutor leaders work with students on activities that include classroom instruction, field trips, and various speakers. We explore a variety of academic and skill-building topics, so volunteers from all walks of life are needed and welcome! Persons or organizations interested in supporting the work of the Weekend Academy can contact the Memphis Coordinator, Doris H. Ward by phone at 901-372-5616, or via email at dward@mlgw.org.
